Who Owned Jaguar?

Jaguar didn’t always specialize in luxury sedans, sports cars, and SUVs. They began in 1922 as the Swallow Sidecar Company, making sidecars for motorcycles in Blackpool, England. The founders William Lyons and William Walmsley soon renamed it S.S. Cars Limited, and their first “sports saloon” (aka a sports sedan) was produced in 1935. The SS Jaguar 100, an open-top two-passenger sports car, was also produced that year.

Find out more about the long journey that started nearly 100 years ago for Jaguar to become the company they are today:

  1. In 1945, the S.S. Cars were renamed Jaguar Cars Limited to distinguish themselves as a memorable brand.
  2. Jaguar became known for stunning sports cars like the Jaguar XK120 and Jaguar E-TYPE and for international motorsports, winning the 1951 and 1953 Le Mans 24-Hour Race.
  3. In 1965, Jaguar Cars became part of British Motor Holdings Limited, which later merged with the Rover manufacturer Leyland Motor Corporation Limited, creating the British Leyland Motor Corporation.
  4. The British Leyland Motor Corporation became nationalized in 1975 due to financial difficulties, but in 1984 Jaguar became its own company again.
  5. Ford Motors purchased Jaguar in 1999 and purchased Land Rover in 2000, selling both to Tata Motors in 2008.

Who Makes Jaguar?

The United Kingdom is still responsible for the manufacturing of Jaguar and Land Rover models. The JLR headquarters are in Coventry, which is two hours north of London, while there are two design centers and three manufacturing plants across the UK that make both genuine Jaguar parts models and Land Rover parts and model. There is another location in Halewood near Liverpool which mostly makes Land Rover models.
